A multipurpose cultural center opened in the Dongdaemun shopping district in Seoul on Friday, after five years of construction work.

The four-story building with three basements, named the “Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP),” is expected to become a new landmark in the area. It has a combined floor space of 86,574 square meters and measures 29 meters in height.

The state-of-the-art building, constructed at a total cost of 484 billion won, was designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, a winner of the Pritzker Prize.

According to the Seoul Design Foundation, operator of the DDP, the center will be open to the public 24 hours a day. The Dongdaemun shopping district attracts a large number of people at nighttime.

In celebration of the opening of the DDP, Seoul Fashion Week and special exhibitions will be held, the organizers said. They include Zaha Hadid’s “360 Degrees”; an exhibition of works by Enzo Mari, a noted Italian modernist artist and furniture designer; and a sports design show.
