In terms of trade volume, South Korea fell one notch to ninth place in the world in 2013, according to the country’s central bank Tuesday.

China outpaced the United States for the first time and took the top spot among member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Germany came in third, followed by Japan, France, the Netherlands and Britain. Hong Kong ranked eighth, ahead of South Korea.

Officials at the Bank of Korea (BOK) attributed South Korea’s fall in the WTO rankings to a decrease in imports. Imports slid 0.7 percent to US$515.6 billion in 2013 from the previous year.

In terms of export volume, South Korea ranked seventh; and import volume, ninth.
