Park Joo-ho, a left back currently playing for FSV Mainz 05 in the German Bundesliga, will replace Kim Jin-soo on South Korea’s 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the country’s football governing body announced Thursday.

Kim of Albirex Niigata, a Japanese J. League Division 1 association club, has yet to fully recover from an ankle injury, officials at the Korea Football Association (KFA) said.

Kim suffered an injury to his right ankle during a J. League soccer match on May 6.

Head coach Hong Myung-bo decided to replace Kim with Mainz’s Park who has recovered from a foot injury which could have caused his omission from the original World Cup roster announced on May 8, the officials said.

Park is expected to compete with Yun Suk-young of English club Queens Park Rangers (QPR) for the left back position.
