FIFA Thursday (local time) banned Uruguay’s forward Luis Suarez for nine international matches for biting an Italian defender during a preliminary soccer match between Uruguay and Italy of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The world’s football governing body also barred Suarez from all football activities for four months.

The disciplinary measure goes into effect immediately, FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

Accordingly, Suarez will be banned from playing in a 2014 World Cup second-round soccer match between Uruguay and Colombia scheduled for Saturday.

Suarez allegedly bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini’s left shoulder during the Group D match at the Dunas Arena in Natal on Tuesday.

When asked whether he bit Chiellini in an interview following the game, Suarez said: “These are just things that happen out on the pitch," according to AFP.

Previously, Suarez received penalties twice for similar biting incidents.
