‘Roaring Current’ draws more than 16 million moviegoers

“Roaring ‘Currents,” a South Korean film about a crushing victory Adm. Yi Sun-sin won over Japanese invaders during the late 16th century, exceeded the 16 million viewer mark on Aug. 24, its distributors said.

The film starring veteran actor Choi Min-sick (“Oldboy” 2003) reached the milestone at 8 a.m. on Aug. 24, 26 days after its release, CJ Entertainment in Seoul said.

As of Aug. 23, its box-office sales amounted to 123.1 billion won, compared with a record high of 128.4 billion won set by Hollywood blockbuster "Avatar.“

Meanwhile, "The Pirates," a South Korean comedy-action film, topped the box-office on Aug. 23 with 392,401 moviegoers, compared with 332,374 viewers for “Roaring Currents.” The film starring actress Son Ye-jin and actor Kim Nam-gil was released on Aug. 6.
