Poet Ko Un wins Golden Wreath award at int’l poetry festival in Macedonia

South Korean poet Ko Un won the Golden Wreath award at the 53rd Struga Poetry Evenings, an international poetry festival held in the southern Macedonian town of Struga, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO said Monday.

The award ceremony took place on Sunday (local time) at the Bridge of Poetry that crosses the Crn Drim River. The award is one of the most prestigious awards for poets.

The previous recipients of the award include Pablo Neruda in 1972, Leopold Sedar Senghor in 1975, Hans Magnus Enzensberger in 1980, Allen Ginsberg in 1986, Adonis in 1997, Seamus Heaney in 2001 and Tomas Transtromer in 2003.

The festival has been held annually since 1962.
