Sales of vehicles made by South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co. in the EU market rose 10 percent in October from the same month of last year, data showed Tuesday.

The figure surpassed an average growth rate of 6.2 percent recorded in the EU auto market over the cited period.

According to the data complied by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, Hyundai sold 36,378 units in October, compared with 42,072 vehicles for Japanese carmaker Nissan and 24,312 for Swedish automaker Volvo.

Hyundai's market share stood at 3.3 percent, up 0.1 percentage point from a year earlier.

Hyundai saw its EU sales increase for the fourth consecutive month in October. The sales rise offset a decrease in sales in the first half of the year, company officials said.

Its cumulative EU sales in the first 10 months of the year totaled 362,684 units, up 0.6 percent from the corresponding period last year.

German carmaker Volkswagen sold 289,220 units (26 percent of the market) in October, up 7.2 percent from a year earlier, the data said. Sales of French auto group PSA Peugeot Citroen and France-based Renault Group reached 121,639 units (10.9 percent), up 1.1 percent, and 109,027 (9.8 percent), up 10.2 percent, respectively.
