LGBTQ culture festival to be held in S. Korea's conservative port city

SEOUL -- A "queer festival," designed to raise awareness of the human rights of gender minorities and diverse gender-based cultural content, will be held for the third time in the southern port city of Changwon. The port city located west of Busan, South Korea's main maritime gateway, is part of South Gyeongsang Province which has a strong conservative culture.

The organizing committee of the Gyeongnam Queen Culture Festival said in a statement on October 31 that the LGBTQ festival will be held in Changwon City on November 25. The festival was held for the first time as an offline event in 2019 but organizers had to operate the annual festival through online platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizers predicted that about one thousand people would participate in the festival.

One of the largest annual queer festivals in South Korea is the Seoul Queer Culture Festival held in central Seoul in Summer. The festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all parts of South Korea and overseas countries. Keynote speech sessions and concerts are held to raise awareness of gender diversity and promote the ways of living together.
