Bus strikes 18 pedestrians at transit center in Seoul's satellite city

SEOUL -- A public bus has struck 18 pedestrians at a bus transit center in Suwon, a southern satellite city of Seoul, killing an elderly woman and severely injuring two people. The bus also damaged infrastructure including a light pole and road signs.

According to police, the accident took place at around 1:27 p.m. on December 22. An electric bus operated by a female bus driver in her 50s ran over people walking on a pedestrian crossing. The vehicle, which was just leaving a bus stop, came to a stop after it ran over multiple road signs and pedestrian lights.

The police said that a female victim in her 70s died after she was dragged under the bus during the accident. Two people were seriously injured and 15 people received light injuries. There could be more accident victims, the police said, adding that the bus driver was also injured during the accident.

To find the exact cause of the accident, the police will conduct a thorough investigation on the bus and related people. The law enforcers found no traces of alcohol on the driver and the road was not frozen at the time of the accident.
