The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Broadcasting and Media Commission are strengthening their collaboration in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and media.

On June 10, the two agencies convened a policy consultation meeting at the Science Advisory Council in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, to discuss strategies for adapting to changes in the digital media landscape in the AI era.

Deputy Minister Ryu Je-myung stated, "We are now in an era where it is difficult to explain any field without AI. Traditional broadcasting, telecommunications, and media, as well as the entire digital industry, are riding the wave of massive AI advancements."

He added, "I hope that the two agencies will work closely together to address national tasks necessary for the AI era and fulfill their historical missions."

Commissioner Ko Min-soo noted, "As AI and digital technologies rapidly spread across broadcasting, telecommunications, and media, the boundaries between content, platforms, and devices are quickly dissolving."

He emphasized that initiatives such as the global K-FAST alliance, the establishment of AI training data, user protection systems, and the formulation of long-term media development strategies are challenges that cannot be solved by a single agency alone. He expressed hope that today's consultation would mark the starting point for policies that the public can feel.

During the deputy-level meeting, the two agencies discussed potential policies for collaboration in areas including AI, media, over-the-top (OTT) services, digital regulation, and user protection.

In the AI sector, the Broadcasting and Media Commission will share monitoring data and broadcasting video AI training data with the Ministry of Science and ICT to support the development of independent AI foundation models. Some of the AI training data established by the Commission last year will be utilized for research and educational purposes through the Ministry's AI hub.

In the media sector, the two agencies will jointly pursue projects to foster the K-FAST ecosystem and enhance the competitiveness of the domestic OTT industry. The Broadcasting and Media Commission will participate in the global K-FAST alliance operated by the Ministry, and both agencies will work together to identify new projects related to OTT and FAST. They also plan to expand connections between existing events such as the Korea International Streaming Festival and the International OTT Forum.

The two agencies agreed to strengthen their collaboration in the operation of the Media Development Committee for the formulation of long-term media strategies.

They will also expand cooperation in digital regulation and user protection. In response to the proliferation of platforms and AI services, as well as the increase in cyber incidents, they plan to jointly promote user protection policies and develop related regulatory improvements.

To ensure the smooth implementation of national tasks in the AI and media sectors, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Broadcasting and Media Commission will hold deputy-level policy consultations biannually and conduct practical meetings as needed when major issues arise.
