SEOUL, July 16 (AJP) - Top military officials from Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. met in the U.S. to discuss trilateral security cooperation, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) here said on Thursday.
According to the JCS, its chairman Jin Young-seung who made his first U.S. trip since assuming his post in September last year, attended the 23rd annual Trilateral Chiefs of Defense (Tri-CHOD) meeting in Washington, D.C., the previous day, where he held discussions with his U.S. and Japanese counterparts, Dan Caine and Hiroaki Uchikura.
At the meeting, also attended by U.S. Forces Korea commander Xavier Brunson, U.S. Forces Japan commander Stephen Jost, and Indo-Pacific Command Deputy Commander George Lowell, the three military chiefs reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their combined defense posture and trilateral security cooperation while agreeing to continue working together toward North Korea's complete denuclearization.
They also discussed other security agendas and regional issues along with details for an annual large-scale trilateral military drill dubbed "Freedom Edge" slated for later this year.
They stressed the importance of trilateral cooperation in countering North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and addressing broader regional challenges affecting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the Indo-Pacific.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Jin also held separate talks with Caine and Uchikura.
The next Tri-CHOD will be held in Japan in 2027.
