The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) has commenced the design phase for the Honam region's advanced semiconductor national industrial complex just three months after announcing the candidate site.
On October 1, LH held a kickoff meeting for the 'Honam Region Advanced Semiconductor National Industrial Complex Survey and Design Project' at its Seoul headquarters, marking the start of the formal design process.
The Honam region's semiconductor industrial complex will be developed around the Gwangsan District of Gwangju, which is part of the government's 'three major mega-projects.' The area is set to become a hub for semiconductor fabrication plants and other production facilities.
To expedite the project, LH began the survey and design bidding process immediately after being designated as the preliminary project implementer by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on July 30. The bidding period, which typically takes about 107 days, was shortened to 58 days, allowing for quicker selection of contractors.
The project aims to analyze the semiconductor industry's competitiveness in relation to the region's industrial, workforce, and research and development foundations, while also detailing the direction for establishing the national industrial complex that reflects local characteristics. LH plans to prepare the industrial complex plan by the end of the year and will apply for approval of the plan.
Following consultations with relevant agencies and reviews by the Central Industrial Complex Planning Review Committee, the goal is to obtain approval for the industrial complex plan by mid-2027.
LH President Lee Seong-hoon stated, "The Honam region semiconductor complex is a key project to concentrate the nation's core semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in the Honam area, establishing a new growth hub and foundation for future growth. We will swiftly develop plans that leverage the strengths of the Honam region and work closely with the government and relevant agencies to accelerate the project."
