The South Korean government is currently evaluating its potential membership in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), with the electric and electronics sectors expressing optimism about improved export conditions. However, there are also concerns regarding increased market access for certain products from Japan.

On October 2, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a meeting with five industry associations in the electric and electronics sectors to assess the potential impact of CPTPP membership.

Participating organizations included the Korea Display Industry Association, the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, the Korea Battery Industry Association, the Korea Electric Industry Association, and the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Industry Association.

The government is gathering opinions from stakeholders across various sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, and services, as it considers whether to apply for CPTPP membership. This meeting was organized to understand the implications for the manufacturing sector and to hear feedback from industry representatives.

During the meeting, industry representatives expressed hopes for the benefits of a new free trade agreement (FTA) with Mexico if South Korea joins the CPTPP. They noted that increased transparency in technical regulations and reduced testing and certification burdens could enhance export conditions.

Conversely, concerns were raised about the potential for expanded market access for certain products from Japan.

Kwon Hye-jin, head of the Trade Negotiation Bureau at the Ministry, stated, "In response to rapidly changing trade dynamics, such as the U.S.-China trade conflict, simply increasing the number of bilateral FTAs is insufficient."

She added, "The need for diversifying export markets through CPTPP membership and strengthening alliances with like-minded countries is becoming increasingly important. The government will ensure that industry feedback is thoroughly considered and maintain close communication throughout the review process."

The Ministry plans to continue gathering opinions from other manufacturing sectors, as well as from the services, digital, and financial industries, to assess the sector-specific impacts of CPTPP membership.
