The Korea Railroad Research Institute will begin offering free pre-consultation for companies preparing for railway product type approval starting in December. Experts in various fields will provide guidance on technical standards, application documents, and expected timelines to assist new companies in their preparation for type approval.
On October 6, the institute held a '2026 Railway Product Type Approval Meeting' at its headquarters in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, where it announced this support initiative. The institute is currently entrusted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to conduct type approval inspection work for railway products under the Railway Safety Act.
The pre-consultation will be managed by experts who will help companies verify the system, procedures, and required documents for type approval. The institute also plans to respond to inquiries from companies regarding technical standards or revisions.
As of now, there are a total of 242 type approval certificates issued for railway products, which include electronic interlocking devices, track circuit devices, and adhesive insulated rails across the fields of vehicles, tracks, signaling, communication, and electric power.
Type approval for railway products involves design verification through design suitability inspections, compatibility tests, and product type tests. The manufacturer approval process also includes quality management system suitability inspections and production inspections.
A total of 59 representatives from 32 manufacturing companies attended the meeting. The institute plans to incorporate the feedback received into the inspection procedures and service improvements.
Railroad Research Institute President Sa Gong-myeong stated, “We will expand communication channels to operate the type approval system efficiently and support the competitiveness of the domestic railway product industry.”
