Import Prices Drop 4.4% in June Amid Falling Oil Prices Import prices fell sharply in June, marking the largest decline in three and a half years, due to a significant drop in international oil prices. Although the won-dollar exchange rate rose considerably, the impact of falling oil prices offset this increase, keeping export prices stable.According to the Bank of Korea's export and import price index released on July 15, the export price index (in won, with 2020 as the base year) stood at 188.90 in June, unchanged from 188.82 in May.The rise in the won-dollar exchange rate did not affect oil product prices, which decreased. The average monthly exchange rate surged from 1,490.11 won in May to 1,527.3 won in June.By category, agricultural and fishery products saw a 4.2% increase from the previous month, driven by higher prices for fruits. While prices for coal and oil products (diesel, jet fuel) fell, prices for computers, electronics, and optical devices (semiconductors) remained similar to the previous month.Among specific items, prices for fruits (up 10.6%), DRAM (up 3.1%), and flash memory (up 11.7%) increased compared to the previous month. Conversely, prices for diesel (-15.6%), jet fuel (-18.2%), and ethylene (-19.9%) declined.Import prices dropped 4.4% from the previous month to 161.34, the lowest level since December 2022 (-6.5%).The average price of Dubai crude oil fell 23.0%, from $103.15 per barrel in May to $79.45 in June. However, this price is still 14.7% higher than in the same month last year.Raw material import prices decreased by 10.3% due to falling prices for mining products, including crude oil. Intermediate goods saw a 3.2% decline, driven by lower prices for coal, oil products, and chemicals, while capital goods and consumer goods each rose by 1.6%.Specific items that saw price drops included crude oil (-20.7%), naphtha (-25.5%), bunker C oil (-19.2%), and styrene monomer (-19.9%). In contrast, prices for signal converters (up 9.4%) and coffee (up 4.6%) increased. In June, the trade index (in dollars) showed that the export volume index and import volume index rose by 29.8% and 12.0%, respectively, compared to June of last year. The export value index and import value index surged by 74.8% and 30.5%.The terms of trade index for goods increased by 15.6% year-on-year, as the rise in export prices outpaced that of import prices. The income terms of trade index also rose by 50.0%, driven by increases in both the terms of trade index and the export volume index. The decline in import prices is expected to ease inflationary pressures on consumer prices. Lee Moon-hee, head of the price statistics team at the Bank of Korea, stated, "The increase in consumer goods import prices in June was attributed to the rise in the won-dollar exchange rate compared to the previous month and the same month last year. However, with the decline in raw material and intermediate goods import prices compared to the previous month, the burden on consumer prices is expected to ease somewhat going forward."* This article has been translated by AI. 2026-07-15 06:04:00 -
Trump Blames Iran for Renewed Military Conflict, Withdraws Strait of Hormuz Toll Plan President Donald Trump has placed the blame for the renewed military conflict between the U.S. and Iran squarely on Iran. He also withdrew a plan to impose a toll on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz just one day after announcing it. Instead, he stated that costs would be shared through increased investments from Middle Eastern countries.According to Reuters, Trump made these remarks on July 14 during a meeting at the White House with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Alzaidi, stating, "Iran's first attack was a major mistake."When asked if he regretted easing sanctions on Iran and lifting maritime blockades following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU), Trump denied it, saying, "I wanted to give them a chance to reach an agreement."He added, "Just two days ago, we were in a position to reach an agreement, but Iran suddenly said they could not comply. They attacked first, and we are responding strongly." However, he did not specify what agreement he was referring to.The U.S. resumed airstrikes against Iran after a civilian vessel was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on July 7. At that time, Trump declared that the MOU signed the previous month was over.Trump also retracted his plan to impose a toll on cargo ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which he initially proposed to be set at 20%. He explained that after discussions with Middle Eastern leaders, he decided to share costs in a different manner. He stated, "Middle Eastern countries preferred to resolve the issue in other ways rather than through tolls, and they will make significant investments in the U.S., which I prefer." Specific countries and investment amounts were not disclosed. However, he maintained the blockade on vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports or carrying Iranian cargo. This indicates that while he is not imposing a toll on the entire Strait of Hormuz, military and economic pressure targeting Iran will continue.Trump hinted at the possibility of additional sanctions, stating, "The sanctions bill being pushed by Congress will include Iran, and the pro-Iran militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon may also be added."* This article has been translated by AI. 2026-07-15 06:04:00 -
SK Hynix ADR Valuation Discrepancies: Barclays Sees 70% Upside, Morningstar Calls It Overpriced Valuations for SK Hynix's American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) are sharply divided among financial analysts. Barclays has set a target price of $330, citing a memory supply shortage, while Morningstar has assessed the fair value at $160.On July 14, Investing.com reported that Barclays initiated coverage on SK Hynix ADRs with an 'overweight' rating and a target price of $330. This figure represents a 117% increase from the closing price of $152.35 on July 13 and suggests about 70% additional upside compared to the July 14 closing price of $193.92.Barclays anticipates that the shortage of memory semiconductors will worsen by 2027 and will not be fully resolved by 2028. The firm noted that while demand for memory used in artificial intelligence (AI) servers is rapidly increasing, there are limits to expanding production.Barclays also projects that SK Hynix will maintain over 50% market share in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) sector, which is crucial for AI applications due to its ability to stack multiple DRAM chips for faster data processing. The impact of Chinese competitors on the global DRAM market is expected to be limited, as major global cloud providers are unlikely to adopt Chinese-made DRAM in their data centers, which would prevent significant changes in the existing market structure.Barclays positively assessed the potential for increased share buybacks, estimating that SK Hynix will have cash and easily liquidated assets exceeding 40% of its current market capitalization by the end of 2027.HSBC also expressed a positive outlook on the memory market, suggesting that it is too early to conclude that the memory sector has peaked, given ongoing investments in AI servers and rising DRAM prices. HSBC identified SK Hynix as its top pick among Korean tech stocks, predicting it will maintain a 50-55% share in the next-generation HBM4 market. In contrast, Morningstar has set a fair value of $160 for SK Hynix ADRs, which is about 17% lower than the July 14 closing price of $193.92. Morningstar believes the current stock price is somewhat high relative to the company's value and rates the uncertainty of future price predictions as 'very high.'While acknowledging the rapid growth in demand for AI memory, Morningstar pointed out that the performance of memory semiconductors can fluctuate significantly based on price and supply changes. It noted that despite SK Hynix's lead in the HBM market, the company is not immune to competitive pressures and the risk of declining memory prices.Morningstar also highlighted the premium at which ADRs are trading compared to their Korean counterparts as a concern. The difficulty in freely exchanging Korean stocks and ADRs limits arbitrage opportunities, which could lead to excessive premiums on ADRs if demand from U.S. investors surges. Given that the ADR is still in its early stages, the stock price may experience significant volatility as it seeks to establish a fair price differential. On that day, SK Hynix ADRs closed at $193.92 on the New York Stock Exchange, up 27.3%. Since its listing on Nasdaq at an offering price of $149 on July 10, the stock has seen increased volatility amid growing expectations for AI memory growth.* This article has been translated by AI. 2026-07-15 05:56:00 -
Wash: Inflation Fight Continues Despite Easing Prices Kevin Wash, Chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve, stated that while inflation is easing, the battle against rising prices is not over. He refrained from commenting on future interest rate directions and affirmed the Fed's commitment to maintaining its independence despite political pressures.According to Reuters, during a House Financial Services Committee hearing on July 14, Wash said, "The Fed will not tolerate persistently high inflation," adding, "We have a strong commitment to restoring price stability."He emphasized the need to manage monetary policy correctly to make the price surges of the past five years a thing of the past. He also reiterated the Fed's role in not only ensuring price stability but also maintaining stable employment. In response to the recently released U.S. consumer price index, which showed a faster-than-expected decline, Wash expressed caution. He remarked, "Some may say 'mission accomplished,' but I see it differently; there is still work to be done regarding inflation."However, he did not provide answers on whether interest rates need to be raised again or when rate cuts might begin, indicating that decisions would be based on upcoming inflation and employment data.Wash drew a line against pressure from President Donald Trump regarding interest rate cuts. When asked how he would respond if lawmakers demanded monetary policy that diverges from economic indicators, he stated, "I will adhere to the law and follow the indicators to make the best judgment."He affirmed that even if President Trump or his aides directly pressured him, he would continue to perform his duties. In response to a question about working for Trump, he emphasized, "The Fed is an independent agency, and it is an honor to work independently."The Fed also plans to revise its operations by the end of the year. It is reviewing five areas: communication with the market, the size of its asset holdings, economic indicator analysis, productivity and employment, and price measurement.Wash stated, "If we change the size and management of assets held by the Fed, such as government bonds, we will provide ample explanation to Congress and the financial markets in advance." He also indicated that the Fed would be more cautious in its communications to prevent the market from anticipating interest rate directions too far in advance.* This article has been translated by AI. 2026-07-15 05:36:00 -
Intense Competition for KAI Acquisition: Hanwha vs. Hyundai Motor As the privatization of Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) approaches, major companies are intensifying their competition for acquisition. Hanwha Group, which has declared its intent through a public share buyback, is pitted against Hyundai Motor Group, which is quietly building its influence through expanded collaboration. LIG D&A is also mentioned as a potential candidate, adding to the competitive landscape.According to the defense industry on July 14, Hanwha, a leading candidate for KAI's acquisition, is adopting a top-down strategy. Through Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems, the company plans to secure a 15% stake in KAI by the end of the year and formalize its management participation. On July 8, Hanwha Aerospace invested approximately 186.6 billion won to acquire an additional 1,196,377 shares, increasing its stake to 12.44%. Hanwha Systems has also announced plans to invest 500 billion won by the end of this year to raise its stake to 4.73%, although it aims to keep its total stake below 15%.Once the acquisition battle begins, Hanwha can leverage its existing stake to psychologically pressure competitors and reduce its financial burden for the acquisition. By securing shares, Hanwha can access KAI's critical trade secrets and sensitive information, and participate in decision-making at shareholder meetings regarding amendments to the articles of incorporation, the appointment of outside directors, and new business initiatives. This effectively translates to management participation. In contrast, Hyundai Motor Group and LIG D&A are employing a bottom-up strategy through practical collaboration. Hyundai Motor Group believes that combining its proprietary electrification powertrains and global business capabilities with KAI's aircraft system development capabilities will create synergies in the fields of commercial transportation and autonomous driving. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the joint development of advanced air mobility (AAM) in May and are currently discussing extensive cooperation plans, including the establishment of a joint venture.LIG D&A, which has officially declared its expansion into the aerospace sector through a name change, has also established a close partnership with KAI by signing an MOU for the integration of air munitions for the KF-21 and FA-50. While LIG D&A possesses world-class precision-guided weapon technologies such as Cheongung-II, Shingung, and Hyunmoo, it lacks its own platform to deploy these weapons, which is a significant disadvantage. Given its weaker financial position compared to Hanwha and Hyundai Motor Group, LIG D&A is likely to form a consortium if the acquisition battle commences, potentially leading a coalition with the LG Group and LS Group.Industry insiders speculate that LIG D&A is seeking to secure financial backing through discreet contacts with friendly forces. The optimal timing for the sale is expected to be in the second half of next year. This timing is seen as favorable for alleviating the current government's political burdens while avoiding the onset of the next presidential race. A political insider stated, "We view the appropriate timing for the sale as one that minimizes various risks and maximizes KAI's appeal by intensifying competition among potential candidates. In particular, 2028, ahead of the 2029 national project for the 'Lunar Orbit Communication Satellite Launch,' is expected to be a period when KAI's corporate value is maximized."* This article has been translated by AI. 2026-07-15 05:08:00 -
U.S. House Committee Advances Bill to Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent The U.S. system of Daylight Saving Time, which involves moving clocks forward one hour in March and reverting them back in early November, may soon be standardized year-round. Newsweek reported that a bill supporting this change passed the House Rules Committee by a vote of 6 to 4 on July 13.According to reports, the bill, known as the Sunshine Protection Act, was introduced by Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.). Currently, most regions in the U.S. observe Daylight Saving Time by setting clocks forward at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and reverting them back at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. The proposed legislation aims to maintain the summer time standard throughout the entire year. The bill previously passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee in May with a vote of 48 to 1 and has now cleared the Rules Committee. If it passes the full House, it will move to the Senate for consideration.Daylight Saving Time is currently observed in most parts of the U.S., excluding Hawaii and some areas in Arizona. Proponents of the bill argue that the biannual clock changes negatively impact health and that maintaining Daylight Saving Time year-round would benefit outdoor activities, tourism, and economic growth. Among the supporters is President Donald Trump, who emphasized on his social media platform Truth Social shortly after the bill's passage in May that “millions of dollars are spent each year adjusting clocks” and called it a significant victory for the Republican Party. According to Fox News, about 20 states, including Alabama, South Carolina, Oregon, Maine, and Florida, have already passed state-level measures to implement the bill if it is approved by Congress. However, opinions within the Democratic Party are divided regarding the permanent adoption of Daylight Saving Time, as reported by Politico. Opponents include Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-Calif.), who have raised concerns about child safety and the potential negative effects on physical and mental health. Conversely, Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), the Democratic chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee, expressed support, questioning whether anyone still wants to change the clocks.Politico noted that while the push for permanent Daylight Saving Time has been a long-debated topic, progress has been slow, partly due to opposition from lawmakers representing agricultural states. In some rural areas during winter, farmers may not see sunlight until 9 a.m. if the clocks are not set back. In response, Rep. Mary Scanlon (D-Pa.) proposed an amendment in the Rules Committee to make standard time permanent year-round while allowing states to opt for Daylight Saving Time, but it was rejected. The U.S. first implemented Daylight Saving Time in 1918. Over 70 countries, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Israel, also observe this practice. In South Korea, Daylight Saving Time was in effect from 1948 to 1960, with a temporary implementation around the 1988 Seoul Olympics. 2026-07-15 05:08:00 -
KAI Acquisition Faces High Valuation and Monopoly Concerns Amid Split Sale Discussions The acquisition of Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is gaining momentum, but it faces challenges including a valuation exceeding 5 trillion won and concerns over monopoly. This has led to discussions about a potential split sale.According to the defense industry on July 14, KAI's estimated fair purchase price is around 5 trillion won. The value of the current largest shareholder, the Export-Import Bank of Korea, which holds a 26.41% stake, is estimated at 4.5 trillion to 4.8 trillion won when factoring in a management premium of 20-30%. If major bidders like Hanwha Group, Hyundai Motor Group, or the LIG consortium participate actively, the premium could rise above 40%, pushing the price over 5 trillion won.Given the significant financial burden of the acquisition and the potential monopoly concerns for Hanwha, a split sale is being considered as a viable alternative. KAI's business segments include aviation, which focuses on fixed-wing and rotary-wing platforms; space, which develops satellites and launch vehicles; and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) for the aerospace aftermarket. An industry insider stated, "The interests of the companies considered as strong candidates for KAI are clearly different, and given that these candidates can exert strong ownership, a split sale could actually be a way to maintain KAI's competitiveness. From the government's perspective, ensuring a successful auction at a fair price is also important, so this scenario is worth considering."If a split sale occurs, Hanwha Group is likely to focus on acquiring fixed-wing and space launch vehicle technologies. With Hanwha Aerospace already possessing aircraft engine technology, integrating KAI's platform technology could lead to vertical integration from engine production to airframe assembly, potentially transforming South Korea into a 'SpaceX'.Hyundai Motor Group, on the other hand, is focusing on MRO business to secure future mobility and aerospace manufacturing supply chains rather than defense. LIG D&A, known for its precision-guided munitions and avionics, is expected to find synergies in rotary-wing, unmanned aerial vehicles, and avionics sectors. This aligns with the government's and military's interests in countering Hanwha Group's potential monopoly in the defense market.Opinions on the split sale are divided. Proponents argue it could alleviate monopoly concerns in the defense market and prevent allegations of favoritism towards specific companies. They also highlight the potential for enhancing expertise through synergies in core business areas. However, critics warn that splitting KAI could fragment the organization, diminishing its competitiveness and reducing the efficiency of the MRO business.A space industry representative noted, "In large corporations, if the business direction does not align, certain areas may be neglected during the restructuring process post-acquisition. It may be more effective to support specific business areas for companies that show active interest."A KAI union representative stated, "The aerospace market can only grow in a fair competitive environment. If Hanwha absorbs KAI, it could create a 'super subordinate' that the state cannot easily regulate, jeopardizing national interests and public projects. Therefore, the split sale option should be carefully considered for enhancing KAI's competitiveness and advancing the national space industry."* This article has been translated by AI. 2026-07-15 05:04:00 -
Energy Storage Systems Open New Market for South Korea's Battery Industry The South Korean government's initiative to expand access to the power grid for renewable energy sources is boosting expectations within the domestic battery industry. With the launch of the energy storage system (ESS) project, there are forecasts that subsequent orders responding to the expansion of solar and offshore wind energy could open a new large-scale market for the three major battery companies.According to industry sources, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment signed a memorandum of understanding on July 10 with nine selected companies for the '2026 AI-based ESS Construction Support Project.' The selected companies include VPP Lab, LG Energy Solution, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) KDN, SK Eteronics, HD Hyundai Electric, Gridwiz, Korea East-West Power, Korea Midland Power, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction. The ministry plans to add 182.4 megawatts of solar power facilities currently waiting for grid connection to the power network through this project. To achieve this, ESS with a maximum output of 128 megawatts and a storage capacity of 640MWh will be built across 32 distribution lines nationwide. The goal is to manage surplus power by installing ESS in areas like Honam and Jeju, where the capacity for renewable energy is saturated, instead of expanding the distribution network. A budget of 558.6 billion won will be allocated over the next five years. What the battery industry is particularly focused on is the potential for future follow-up projects beyond the current orders. With the cumulative installed capacity of solar energy in South Korea exceeding 30GW and the anticipated expansion of offshore wind energy, demand for ESS to compensate for fluctuations in renewable energy output is expected to continue rising.Solar energy generation varies with daylight and weather, while wind power output fluctuates significantly based on wind strength. As the share of renewable energy increases, the importance of ESS, which can store generated power for supply during peak demand times, also grows. Moreover, the government's announcement last month of a long-term bidding plan for offshore wind energy aims to pursue a total of 55GW in bids by 2035, further increasing the potential demand for ESS. As offshore wind facilities increase, the need for storage systems to complement the intermittency of wind power and maintain grid stability will also expand. If the government gradually expands the ESS project for the distribution network, competition for follow-up orders among the three major domestic battery companies is expected to intensify. An industry insider noted, "While the government's specific long-term order plans have not all been disclosed, it is difficult to determine the market size immediately. However, we are closely watching the potential for ESS to grow into another large market in South Korea."* This article has been translated by AI. 2026-07-15 05:04:00 -
Government Expands Radio Usage Fee Reduction to Boost Budget Mobile Industry The government has decided to significantly increase the radio usage fee reduction rate for small and medium-sized budget mobile operators from 50% to 90%. This decision aims to alleviate the burden of communication costs for citizens while enhancing the competitiveness of the budget mobile industry. As a representative of the budget mobile sector, I sincerely welcome this decision and express my deep gratitude to the Ministry of Science and ICT and the finance authorities for their careful consideration of the challenges faced by the industry.Since its introduction in 2010, the budget mobile sector has played a crucial role in promoting competition in South Korea's telecommunications market and reducing household communication costs. Currently, the number of budget mobile subscribers has surpassed 10 million, establishing it as a core component of the mobile telecommunications market rather than a niche segment. It is now common to find people using budget mobile services, especially as citizens seek reasonable communication costs amid ongoing high inflation and economic downturns. The user base continues to expand across all age groups. However, the growth process has not been without challenges. Budget mobile operators, which lease networks from major telecommunications companies rather than operating their own, have consistently worked to provide better services and lower rates despite structural limitations. Recently, rising labor costs, increased marketing expenses, and wholesale pricing pressures have made the business environment increasingly difficult. This is not just an issue for one operator but a reality faced by the entire industry. In this context, the radio usage fee reduction system has served as a vital policy tool supporting the growth of the budget mobile industry. However, in recent years, the gradual reduction of these fees has led to concerns about declining profitability and reduced investment capacity, threatening the sustainability of the industry ecosystem. The association has consistently explained the realities of the industry to the government and advocated for the need to expand the fee reductions, making this decision particularly significant as it reflects those voices. The expansion of the radio usage fee reduction carries the expectation of translating into lower rates and consumer benefits, as desired by the government and the public. When the financial relief gained from the reductions leads to the launch of more affordable plans and enhanced consumer benefits, the intent of this decision will be fully realized. The association will actively support member companies in utilizing the fee reductions to lower rates and expand consumer benefits, as well as reinvest in service quality improvements and the development of new services. We will strive to ensure that the expansion of the reductions yields results in alleviating communication costs and invigorating market competition.Achieving balanced growth across the entire ecosystem, including large corporate-affiliated budget mobile operators, is also a crucial task. Large corporate-affiliated operators have contributed to broadening the budget mobile market through differentiated services and investments alongside small and medium-sized budget mobile companies. As the current budget mobile landscape has been shaped by the participation of diverse operators, we hope that large corporate-affiliated budget mobile operators will continue to seek ways to grow sustainably.Furthermore, for the budget mobile industry to take a significant leap forward, there is a need to prepare for a transition to a new form of budget mobile service, known as Full MVNO, which involves independently building and operating core facilities. This represents not just an extension of existing budget mobile services but a new industry model requiring independent system operation capabilities, making the participation of well-capitalized and technically capable operators critical to its success. We hope that, alongside support for small operators, a policy and institutional framework will be established promptly to enable capable operators to take on these new challenges. We sincerely hope that the recent expansion of the radio usage fee reduction will serve as a new starting point that goes beyond mere cost support, contributing significantly to the advancement of the budget mobile industry and the reduction of citizens' communication costs. The budget mobile association will also work closely with the government to alleviate the burden of communication costs for citizens and foster a healthy telecommunications market ecosystem.* This article has been translated by AI. 2026-07-15 05:04:00 -
Intense Competition for KAI Acquisition: Hanwha, Hyundai, and LIG Show Interest The competition for the acquisition of Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is heating up as several companies express interest. Hyundai Motor Group is looking to KAI as a strategic partner to enhance its capabilities in advanced air mobility (AAM) and electrification technologies. Meanwhile, Hanwha Group sees KAI as the final piece in building a comprehensive defense system that spans land, sea, and air. LIG D&A is also being mentioned as a potential candidate.According to industry sources on July 14, the possibility of KAI's privatization has resurfaced, drawing attention to how potential acquirers plan to utilize KAI's resources. As the only domestic company capable of developing and manufacturing complete aircraft, each contender claims significant synergy from the acquisition. The companies showing interest in acquiring KAI include Hanwha Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and LIG D&A. They are focusing on KAI's technological capabilities and production base for various purposes, including AAM, integrated defense systems, and aviation weapon systems.Hanwha Group, which has proactively sought to increase its stake in KAI, aims to complete its comprehensive defense system through this acquisition. While Hanwha has a broad defense portfolio that includes self-propelled artillery, armored vehicles, ships, aircraft engines, radars, and satellites, it lacks the capability to develop and produce complete fighter jets and military aircraft. Acquiring KAI, which has platforms like the KF-21 and FA-50, would solidify its position as the largest and dominant defense company in South Korea. This acquisition would also enhance Hanwha's export competitiveness. Analysts suggest that it would enable Hanwha to establish a unique defense ecosystem, allowing it to compete with global defense giants like Lockheed Martin and Boeing.Hyundai Motor Group is also looking to KAI to find a breakthrough in its AAM business. After establishing a dedicated AAM subsidiary, Genesis Air Mobility (now Supernal), in the U.S. in 2020, Hyundai has been developing its own aircraft but has not achieved significant results, accumulating a total deficit of 2 trillion won, including a loss of 456 billion won last year.Industry insiders believe that if Hyundai acquires KAI, it could reduce its research and development investment burden while enhancing its aircraft hardware capabilities. The lightweight technology gained through joint development could also be widely applied in next-generation businesses such as electric vehicles, purpose-built vehicles (PBVs), and robotics. This investment could secure future core technologies, positioning KAI as a strategic partner.LIG D&A is consistently mentioned as a potential acquirer due to its strengths in guided weapons, radars, and avionics. Combining these capabilities with KAI's complete aircraft platforms could provide comprehensive integration capabilities for aviation weapon systems, from armaments to sensors and aircraft. There is also significant potential for synergy in expanding existing operations into the aerospace sector. LIG D&A CEO Shin Ik-hyun stated last month that the company is "carefully considering" the possibility of acquiring KAI.The biggest variable in the KAI acquisition process is the government. Although KAI is a publicly traded private company, the state-owned Export-Import Bank holds a 26.41% stake and exercises effective control over its management. The transfer of management rights or a stable change in the largest shareholder through the sale of this stake is unlikely to materialize without government policy and political judgment.Jang Won-jun, a professor at Jeonbuk National University’s Department of Advanced Defense Industry, noted, "As the global defense industry becomes increasingly important, the necessity for mergers and acquisitions involving KAI is rising. If Hanwha acquires KAI, the biggest issue will be monopoly, and each company has its strengths and weaknesses, so government responses will vary depending on the scenario." 2026-07-15 05:04:00
