A 12-year-old Lebanese boy, Hassan Korayni, had surgery last week to separate fingers on his right hand that had been stuck together due to severe burns, with financial help from South Korea's Dongmyeong Unit, the JCS said in a release. He is expected to get a similar operation for his left hand about two months from now, it said.
The South Korean contingent decided to provide financial support to allow Korayni and another Lebanese child with a hard-to-treat ailment to receive surgery. The other child is a 12-year-old girl, Roykya Mohamad, who has been suffering from a deformed ankle. She is expected to undergo surgery in July, the JCS said.
A total of eight children had applied for the project from five villages under responsibility of the 350-member South Korean contingent, but the others were ruled out either because they could be treated with methods other than surgery or it was too late for them to get surgery, the JCS said.
The budget for the project is about US$15,000, it said.
The unit has been stationed in southern Lebanon since 2007 as part of the U.N. interim forces overseeing a ceasefire and setting up a buffer zone between Lebanon and Israel.//Yonhap
