China carried out a land-based mid-course missile interception test in northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on Jan. 27, Chinese media reported.

A similar anti-missile interception test was successfully conducted in January 2010.

An official at the Defense Ministry's Information Bureau said the 2013 test attained the preset goal, according to the Global Times affiliated with the People's Daily.

Experts said such a test is aimed at building shield for China's air defense to intercept incoming warheads such as ballistic missiles in space.

The official was quoted as saying that the missile interception test is defensive in nature and targets no other country.
