According to the data released by market researcher FnGuide and the Financial Supervisoty Service last week, 18 or 31 percent of 58 listed construction companies posted a net loss in the first six months of 2013.
GS Engineering and Construction topped the list with a net loss of 554.6 billion won, followed by Dongbu Construction with 124.5 billion won, Samsung Engineering with 57.2 billion won and Sambu Construction with 33.3 billion won.
Some builders, on the other hand, recorded a surplus, with Daelim Industrial posting the largest surplus of 210.9 billion won, followed by Hyundai Engineering and Construction with 209.2 billion won and Samsung C&T's construction arm with 95.9 billion won.
Samsung C&T's construction unit and Daelim saw their earnings drop 73.8 percent and 7.2 percent in the January-June period from the same period last year, respectively. Hyundai's net profit soared 14 percent over the cited period.
