LG Display world’s top large LCD panel maker

LG Display retained its position as the world's top maker of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels that are 9.1 inches or larger in the third quarter, a market researcher said Wednesday. 

According to DisplaySearch, the South Korean panel maker shipped 45.15 million units or 26.1 percent of 172.83 million units shipped globally in the July-September period. 

The figure represents an increase of 0.9 percentage point from the previous quarter. 

LG Display has kept its top spot in the larger LCD panel market since the fourth quarter of 2009. 

Another South Korean panel producer Samsung Display ranked second with a shipment of 34.20 million units or 19.8 percent of the global shipment, while Taiwanese players Chimei Innolux and AU Optronics placed third and fourth with 30.28 million units (17.5 percent) and 29.18 million units (16.9 percent), respectively. 

Chinese panel maker BOE came in fifth with a shipment of 12.17 million units (7 percent). 

In terms of revenue, LG Display also kept its lead in the third quarter. Its revenue amounted to US$4.87 billion or 26.5 percent of the total. 

Samsung came in second with $3.72 billion (20.3 percent).
