Kim is to assume the post on Jan. 1, 2014, Asiana said. He will replace Yoon Young-doo who has been president and CEO for five years.
Asiana has a controlling stake in Air Busan, a budget carrier headquartered in South Korea’s second largest city of Busan.
Kim’s appointment came about five months after an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 carrying 307 people - 291 passengers and 16 crew members - crash-landed at San Francisco International Airport last July. The accident left three dead and more than 180 injured.
Asiana said the appointment is part of a shake-up of its executives affecting a total of 47 officials.
Han Tae-keun, managing director of Asiana, was appointed to lead Air Busan, the airline company said.
