Samsung Electronics said Monday it plans to build a state-of-the-art chipmaking facility in Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometers south of Seoul, at a total cost of 15.6 trillion won.

The company signed a pact to establish the new semiconductor plant with the Gyeonggi provincial government, the Pyeongtaek City administration and the Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation earlier in the day.

Construction will begin in the first half of 2015, and completion is scheduled for the second half of 2017, it said.

Samsung has not yet decided whether to produce memory chips or system chips at the new plant, Kim Ki-nam, chief of the company's memory chip business division, told reporters before the signing ceremony, adding that a decision will be made in consideration of market conditions.

Currently, the company has two chipmaking facilities in Giheung and Hwaseong, also located in Gyeonggi Province.
