S. Korea's share in DRAM market hits record high of 71.7% in Q1: market researcher

South Korea's share in the global DRAM (dynamic random access memory) market hit a record high in the first quarter, a semiconductor market research firm said Tuesday.

The combined share of Samsung Electronics and its compatriot SK hynix in the world's DRAM market stood at a whopping 71.7 percent, according to DRAM eXchange. It broke the previous record of 70.4 percent set in the previous quarter.

Samsung took up a 43.1 percent share, up 1.7 percentage points from the previous quarter, while SK had a 27.3 percent share, down 0.4 percentage point from three months earlier. (Note: Market share calculation does not include "Others" category.

Micron Group came in third with a 22.5 percent share, down 1.5 percentage point from the October-December period. U.S.-based Micron Technology acquired Japan's Elpida Memory in 2013.

Taiwan's Nanya and its compatriot Winbond ranked a distant fourth and fifth with 3.2 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively.
