A large sand tiger shark has gobbled up a smaller hound shark at a major South Korean aquarium in a rare scene which attracted curious visitors, aquarium officials said Friday.
The scene was spotted late Thursday at the COEX Aquarium in South Korea's largest underground shopping mall in southern Seoul.
"The tail of the 1.2 meter-long hound shark is still seen at the mouth of the 2.2 meter-long sand tiger shark, a day after it was swallowed," an aquarium official told Aju News.
The sand tiger shark worth 83,300 US dollars was brought into the aquarium from Florida, while the smaller shark valued at $833 was caught in waters off South Korea's west coast, he said.
"It usually takes a week for the sand tiger shark to completely digest the smaller one," he said, adding the scene is now attracting curious visitors.
"It's not easy to find the reason, but we believe it took place while the two sharks were in a turf war," the official said.
