Apple has dethroned Samsung for the first time in five years and became the largest smartphone maker in the world, according to a report by Strategy Analytics, an international market research firm.
The report showed Apple shipped 78.3 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of 2016, up five percent from a year ago, while Samsung sold 77.5 million, down 4.6 percent. Apple's market share stood at 17.8 percent, compared to Samsung's 17.7 percent.
"This was the iPhone’s best performance for over a year, as Apple capitalized on Samsung's recent missteps, Samsung lost momentum in the quarter as a result of its Note 7 battery fiasco," the report said. Chinese smartphone makers Huawei and OPPO stood third and fourth with 44.9 million and 29.5 million each.
