SEOUL -- South Korea's major mobile carrier SK Telecom will adopt the Indonesian language service for its metaverse platform "Ifland" targeting the Southeast Asian country with the world's fourth-largest population. The company will also work with Indonesia's leading game developer Agate to gain a competitive edge in Indonesia with a population of some 277.5 million.

Using Ifland, anyone can host lectures, business forums, and concerts in a virtual space. The platform incorporates a volumetric capture technique that uses multiple cameras to capture an entire scene in 360 degrees. The special image-capturing technique is used to create three-dimensional (3D) environments for the production of high-end virtual reality and augmented reality content. As of July 2023, Ifland's monthly active users reached 4.37 million, with 34 percent being non-Koreans. Indonesian users accounted for the second-largest portion after Indians.

SKT said the company is currently working to include the Indonesian service for Ifland. The mobile carrier will cooperate with Agate to create localized content and promote them in Indonesia. "We will continue to do our best to provide Ifland users with content and services that understand their culture and society by partnering with more local companies," SKT's metaverse division head Yang Maeng-seog said in a statement on November 28.

To expand its business in Southeast Asia, the South Korean company also partnered with Malaysia's major telecom company CelcomDigi Berhad, and Cosmic Technologies, a leading internet of things (IoT) solution provider in the Philippines. SKT will also adopt other languages such as Malay and Hindi for Ifland.

Metaverse platforms have been incorporated in many sectors in South Korea to bridge the gap between online and offline spaces. According to Emergen Research, a market research firm, the global metaverse market is projected to reach $828.95 billion by 2028.
