SEOUL --Svetlana Zakharova's scheduled ballet performance in Seoul has been cancelled, the organizer announced on March 15.

Zakharova, a Ukrainian-born prima ballerina with the Bolshoi Ballet, was set to perform in "Modanse," a ballet depicting the life of fashion icon Coco Chanel, at the Seoul Arts Center's Opera House from April 17 to 21.

The cancellation follows growing worldwide backlash against Russian artists and cultural institutions due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In Seoul, the organizer, InaArts Production, faced protests from various groups after announcing Zakharova's performance. The company said it received a request from the Seoul Arts Center to cancel the event.

"InaArts Production, prioritizing the safety of both audience and artist, has made the difficult decision to cancel the Modanse 2024 Korea tour," the company said in a statement. "We sincerely apologize to those who were looking forward to the performance and ask for your understanding."

Zakharova is known for her vocal support of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his policies. Her open endorsement of Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 drew mixed reactions.
