The rival parties agreed to pass 90 noncontroversial bills focused on people’s livelihoods at a plenary session scheduled for Jan. 29. The People Power Party said it will withdraw its filibusters on those bills.

Cheon Jun-ho, the Democratic Party’s floor deputy chief for operations, and Yoo Sang-bum, the People Power Party’s floor deputy chief for operations, announced the decision after meeting at the National Assembly on Jan. 28 to negotiate the plenary agenda.

Cheon said that of 175 bills slated for the plenary session, the parties agreed to prioritize urgent livelihood-related measures and pass 90 of them. He said he expected the plan to be finalized after further talks between the parties’ floor leaders later that day.

Yoo said the parties would pass the agreed-upon bills by withdrawing filibusters that had been requested. He added that revisions to the National Assembly Act, including changes to the filibuster system, require more discussion and would be taken up again if the floor leaders reach an agreement.

The parties’ floor leaders were set to meet in the afternoon to continue final talks on the National Assembly Act revision.
