Point2 Technology, a deep-tech startup co-founded by Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) professor Bae Hyun-min and KAIST alumni, has secured expanded Series B funding, KAIST said on Wednesday.
Investors included Nvidia’s venture arm, NVentures, as well as Maverick Silicon and UMC Capital, KAIST said.
The funding closes Point2’s Series B round at about 100 billion won ($76 million). KAIST said it is the first Korea-based startup and the first Korean semiconductor company to win a strategic investment from Nvidia.
KAIST attributed the investment to Point2’s “e-Tube” technology. AI data centers must connect thousands of semiconductors, but copper wiring has limits on transmission distance, while fiber-optic links have been criticized for higher costs and power use, KAIST said.
Point2’s approach uses radio-frequency signals and plastic waveguides for data transmission. KAIST said it extends transmission distance by about 10 times compared with copper, and cuts power consumption and costs to about one-third of fiber-optic cables. It also reduces latency, KAIST said, calling it a key technology for next-generation AI infrastructure.
“This is a representative case in which core technology developed at KAIST led to investment from global big tech,” Bae said. “We will strengthen support so startups with strong technology can enter global markets quickly.”
