The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on June 18 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Anthropic, a global artificial intelligence (AI) research and development company, to collaborate on AI safety and cybersecurity.
Through this MoU, the ministry plans to conduct an in-depth analysis of the impact of AI on cyber attacks and defenses. It will assess the safety of AI models and the risks of misuse in the Korean context, as well as promote red team evaluations of autonomous AI agents. The goal is to strengthen the collaboration with Anthropic to ensure the safety of advanced AI technologies.
This agreement follows discussions between Deputy Prime Minister Baek Kyun-ho and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei during the '2026 India AI Impact Summit' in February, marking a significant step in their collaborative efforts.
After the MoU was signed, Lee Do-kyu, head of the Information and Communication Policy Bureau, met with Chris Ciauri to discuss the direction of their cooperation in AI safety and cybersecurity.
In the area of AI safety, the Ministry's AI Safety Research Institute (AISI) and Anthropic will actively collaborate on safety assessments of AI models and autonomous AI agents. In cybersecurity, they plan to work together on identifying AI vulnerabilities, including in the financial sector, and to share expertise and information on cyber threats swiftly.
Lee stated, "This collaboration with Anthropic, a global AI frontier company, will serve as a driving force to expand the horizons of AI innovation in Korea on a solid foundation of safety and security."
Ciauri remarked, "The signing of this MoU is significant in establishing a long-term cooperation framework in Korea. I look forward to further developing this partnership alongside Korea's AI ecosystem."
Meanwhile, Anthropic officially opened its Seoul office on June 17. Choi Ki-young, head of Anthropic Korea, noted during a press briefing that the establishment of the Seoul office signifies a long-term foundation for collaboration with leaders in Korea's AI sector.
