Lee and first lady Kim Hea Kyung landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport, where they were welcomed by Cha Ji-hoon, who serves as South Korea's permanent representative to the United Nations, Kang Kyung-wha, South Korea's envoy to the U.S., and Kim Sang-ho, South Korea's consul general in New York.
Lee is set to take the podium at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday for his keynote address. In the speech, he is expected to propose measures to reform the United Nations to better address global challenges, highlight South Korea's contributions to the international community, and lay out his administration's vision for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Following the address, Lee will meet with U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and also hold talks with other heads of state, with a possible chance to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Before departing for Mexico on Wednesday, Lee will attend a business forum that brings together economic and financial leaders from both South Korea and the U.S.
