BAT Korea Manufacturing (BAT Sacheon Plant) has restored a well in Sin-gi Village, South Gyeongsang Province, which has served as a water source for local residents for nearly 400 years.

On October 26, BAT Sacheon Plant announced the completion of the well restoration project in collaboration with Professor Lim Seung-joo's research team from Gyeongsang National University. A ceremony to commemorate the restoration was held on October 23, attended by researchers and local residents.

The Sin-gi Village well has been a primary water source for residents for about 400 years. However, its usage declined with the introduction of municipal water supply, and it lost its function due to aging infrastructure and deteriorating water quality.

BAT Sacheon Plant began the restoration work earlier this year, focusing on facility maintenance and water quality improvement. Following trial runs and regular water quality analyses, the company reported that the water quality has been improved to a drinkable level.

The restored well will now be used as a source of domestic water for residents and is expected to serve as an emergency water supply during droughts or other crises. This project also aims to preserve a historical asset that has been part of the community for generations.

This initiative is part of efforts to maintain and implement the highest level of 'Platinum' certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS). AWS is an international certification system that encourages the management of water use within business operations as well as local water resources and related environments. BAT Sacheon Plant received its Platinum certification in December 2022.

Following the completion of the project, BAT Sacheon Plant and the Gyeongsang National University research team plan to conduct regular water quality monitoring and develop management strategies for the well in collaboration with local residents.

Kim Ji-hyung, head of BAT Sacheon Plant, expressed, "I am pleased that the village well, which has not been utilized for a long time, can now benefit the community again. We will continue to engage in responsible water resource management and local cooperation in accordance with AWS international standards."

Additionally, in March, to mark World Water Day (March 22), BAT Korea Manufacturing conducted a plogging event in the area around Gwangpo Bay in Sacheon City. Since 2023, BAT Sacheon Plant has been conducting annual plogging activities to address environmental issues and protect water resources in nearby river areas.
