In South Korea, Christmas is regarded as a special day for couples to go on dates and an opportunity for singles to express their feelings to someone they like. It is common to see men and women spending time together at coffee shops, movie theaters, and fancy restaurants in Gangnam.
According to data released by South Korea's major telecom company SK Telecom, the Yeoksam area in Gangnam District and Seocho, a southern region slightly less crowded than Gangnam, had the most visitors on December 24 and 25 in 2022. The statistics were created through SKT's big data-based analysis platform "GeoVision Puzzle."
Among teenagers and those in their 20s, the most favored region was Seogyo near Hongik University, followed by Sincheon known for South Korea's tallest building The Lotte World Tower. Sincheon also had the highest number of people in their 30s, while those in their 40s and 50s visited Seocho.
Until the late 1960s, Gangnam was rural farmland. Thanks to the rapid development of the city area including the construction of the Hannam Bridge over the Han River, the district turned into the center of finance and fashion trends in Seoul. Han flows across Seoul from the east into the West Sea and currently has 22 bridges that interconnect the northern and southern city parts.
GeoVision Puzzle incorporates location data to offer information on the floating population and congestion in designated areas. The platform is also used to figure out popular tourist spots and residential information in South Korea.
