Lee Jay-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and heir apparent to its parent Samsung Group, climbed to 184th place in the list of the world's richest people released by Bloomberg, a U.S. media firm, Tuesday. His assets were estimated at US$7.1 billion as of Dec. 19.

His ranking soared as Cheil Industries made a splash in its debut on the South Korean bourse on Dec. 18. He holds a 23.24 percent stake in Cheil, de facto holding company of Samsung Group, South Korea's largest conglomerate.

In September, Lee was ranked around 360th with assets worth $4.3-4.4 billion.

He retained his spot as South Korea's second wealthiest man after his father Lee Kun-hee, chairman of Samsung Electronics and de facto head of the conglomerate. The senior Lee placed 79th in the Bloomberg billionaires index with assets worth $12.9 billion.
