Overseas credit card spending by South Koreans hit a record high last year due to the strong local currency and an increase in the number of tourists travelling abroad, data showed Monday.

According to the data compiled by a think tank of the Credit Finance Association of Korea, the amount of South Koreans' overseas credit card spending reached US$12.2 billion in 2014, up 15.7 percent from the previous year.

The won-dollar exchange rate averaged 1,053 per dollar in 2014, down 3.8 percent from 1,095 in the previous year.

By nation, the United States topped the list with 37.7 percent of the total overseas credit card spending, followed by Britain, Japan, France and China.

But growth in South Koreans' credit card spending abroad eased to 13 percent in the fourth quarter of last year compared with 18.3 percent in the previous quarter, as the won weakened against the greenback during the October-December period, the data said.
