SEOUL -- South Korea's Hyundai auto group strengthened its alliance with SK Innovation, a major domestic battery company, to develop batteries that are optimized for mobility and provide excellent economic performance. They would jointly develop pouch-type batteries for a hybrid electric vehicle model to be introduced in 2024.

SK Innovation (SKI) said in a statement on April 16 that it would closely work with Hyundai to produce batteries optimized for future vehicle characteristics. The auto group would design hybrid car batteries on its own by verifying materials and selecting specifications to improve battery performance and increase the competitiveness of hybrid vehicles.

"We will be able to upgrade our competitiveness of eco-friendly cars by working with SK Innovation," said Park Chan-young who heads the auto group's powertrain parts division. "We plan to work together in all areas such as battery development, mass production, and quality verification."

SKI has been selected to provide batteries for the first batch of Hyundai's crossover utility vehicles installed with dedicated platforms. In September 2020, SKI and Hyundai agreed to establish an electric vehicle battery ecosystem. "SK Innovation will create synergy with its unique battery technology and manufacturing stability so that the two companies can lead the future mobility industry," said SKI's battery research institute head Lee Jang-won.
