Chip payouts may give Korean won more room to run
SEOUL, August 26 (AJP) - South Korea's won, already near its strongest level in almost a year, has more upside room as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are expected to dole out massive shareholder returns. The dollar influx, however, won't likely match the recent boost from SK hynix's $26.5 billion American depositary receipt issuance, traders say. The won has strengthened sharply in recent weeks as exporters increased dollar selling and SK hynix converted part of its ADR proceeds.

Trump's nuclear realism tests Seoul's denuclearization line SEOUL, August 25 (AJP) - North Korea, according to U.S. President Donald Trump, is not Iran. Washington may have "obliterated" Iran's nuclear program, as Trump puts it, but Pyongyang already possesses what he describes as 57 "very powerful" nuclear weapons — an arsenal he appears more inclined to address through renewed diplomacy and his lingering personal rapport with Kim Jong Un. Trump's contrasting approaches to the two nuclear challenges pose a growing co August 25, 2026 -
Gartner estimate $1 trillion memory sales, aiding Korean chip stocks SEOUL, Aug. 25 (AJP) — South Korea's two chip bellwethers clawed back steep early losses Tuesday after Gartner forecast a memory boom lasting well into next year, giving investors a fresh reason to look past shareholder-return packages that have done little to restore their shares to June peaks. Samsung Electronics ended Tuesday flat at 257,000 won after losing more than 4 percent earlier in the session. The stock had plunged 8.7 percent Monday after its record shareholder-return pla August 25, 2026 -
Sovereign AI race pulls world deeper into Nvidia's orbit SEOUL, August 24 (AJP) - When South Korea named the three teams last week that will carry its bid for a homegrown artificial intelligence model, the reward that mattered most was not cash or recognition. It was more Nvidia. The government said on Aug. 18 that SK Telecom, LG AI Research and startup Upstage had cleared the second round of its sovereign AI foundation model contest. For the next stage, each team will receive access to roughly 1,000 Nvidia B200 graphics processing units, up from ab August 24, 2026 -
BOK August rate call splits 5-4 over back-to-back hike SEOUL, August 24 (AJP) - The Bank of Korea has made clear that monetary policy is biased toward further tightening after its July rate increase, but economists are narrowly divided over whether it will deliver a back-to-back hike this week or wait until the fourth quarter to assess inflation and a sharp repricing in global bond markets. Five of nine economists in a combined AJP and Aju Business Daily survey expect the Monetary Policy Board to hold the benchmark rate at 2.75 percent on Thursday August 24, 2026 -
BigBang's 20th anniversary comes as older K-pop acts find new life SEOUL, August 19 (AJP) - K-pop boy band BigBang marked their 20th anniversary on Wednesday with their first digital single in four years, hoping to continue attracting attention years after their heyday. Their return comes as older K-pop groups are gaining renewed attention, attracting both longtime fans and younger listeners discovering their music years after their debut. But another shift is unfolding at the same time. While veteran acts are finding ways to stay together, some younger idols August 19, 2026 -
Moody's raises growth forecast for South Korea, putting BOK in dilemma over rate hike SEOUL, August 18 (AJP) - Global ratings agency Moody's raised its growth forecast for South Korea to 3.5 percent in a report published last week. The stronger outlook could support another interest rate hike, although strong exports and already high borrowing costs may reduce the need for the Bank of Korea to raise rates again soon. The forecast also put South Korea's growth at 2.7 percent for next year. The 2026 forecast was 1 percentage point higher than Moody's 2.5 percent estima August 18, 2026 -
Samsung, hynix literally 'people's stocks' with entries near 1 in 4 Koreans SEOUL, August 15 (AJP) - Minority-shareholder entries at Samsung Electronics and SK hynix nearly doubled from a year earlier to 11.43 million at the end of June, a tally equivalent to about 22 percent of South Korea's population, underscoring how the first-half chip frenzy dramatically broadened ownership of the country's two memory giants. Minority shareholders held nearly seven out of every 10 shares in both chipmakers — 66.24 percent of Samsung Electronics and 67.98 percent of August 15, 2026 -
Is the Seoul stock party over or just cooling down? SEOUL, August 14 (AJP) — South Korea's KOSPI has rebounded after a heavy crash in July. But the crazy roller-coaster ride has shifted to a duller plateau, with the main drivers quietly taking a back seat. The benchmark index flirted with 7,000 Friday, rebounding more than 30 percent from its late-July intraday low of 5,262.77. Yet trading activity and cash on standby remain well below the levels seen during the market frenzy in June. The ebb is evident. Investor deposits — cas August 14, 2026 -
China cracks memory club, but harder test looms SEOUL, August 14 (AJP) - China's heavily government-backed chipmakers are breaking into the once-exclusive global memory club, with Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC) vaulting into the world's top three NAND flash suppliers for the first time. But just as China closes the gap in manufacturing scale, artificial intelligence is moving the industry's profit pool toward a harder target. YMTC captured 14 percent of global NAND bit shipments in the second quarter, overtaking Japan August 14, 2026
