SEOUL -- South Korea's arms procurement agency has partnered with Hancom Lifecare, a safety equipment-making wing of South Korea's Hancom Group, to jointly carry out a localization program for South Korean ground laser target designators.

Ground laser target designators (GLTDs) are pointing devices that are used to designate a target like an armored vehicle or military facility using a laser. When a target is designated, laser-guided weapons such as bombs and missiles will track down the laser signal to accurately bomb the target. Normally the designator is carried by scout teams that infiltrate the enemy lines to designate important facilities.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said the agency and Hancom Lifecare will cooperate to localize GLTD with improved performance and reduced weight. The homemade GLTD will have the same or higher performance compared to the devices that were brought through the country's first GLTD deployment program in 2012 when DAPA adopted American-made equipment.

"The localized GLTD will play a vital role in increasing South Korean military's attack capabilities," DAPA's naval aerial command system division Major Lee Yung-un told Aju Business Daily on June 23.
