On June 23, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a joint launch ceremony for the "Industrial AI Solutions" and "AI Agents" projects at the L Tower in Yangjae, Seoul, in collaboration with the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), manufacturing firms, and AI specialists.
The government is accelerating the M.AX initiative, which began in September 2022 with ten divisions and over 1,000 organizations. As of February 2023, the alliance has expanded to include 11 divisions and more than 1,500 organizations. The ministry is leveraging this alliance to consolidate the capabilities of manufacturing companies, AI experts, universities, and research institutions to promote the application of AI in industrial settings.
The newly launched Industrial AI Solutions project focuses on rapidly deploying verified AI models to manufacturing sites. AI specialists will fine-tune existing models to suit similar manufacturing processes for immediate application. After working with over 30 manufacturing companies last year, the ministry plans to invest 12.8 billion won this year to generate successful case studies in more than 30 companies.
Some successes have already been reported. In the steel sector, a vision AI-based scrap classification solution has improved grade determination accuracy to over 90%. In the automotive sector, a predictive maintenance solution applied to electric vehicle battery pack welding and processing has enabled early alerts for anomalies within 72 hours, increasing equipment utilization by 10% and reducing defect rates by 20%.
However, there are concerns that the focus of manufacturing AI has been too narrow, concentrating on tasks like defect detection, predictive maintenance, and process optimization. Experts argue that AI should be expanded as a tool for enterprise-wide decision-making, optimizing not just production line efficiency but also delivery times, inventory, costs, safety, and design to enhance overall competitiveness in manufacturing.
In response, the government has decided to launch the AI Agents project. This initiative will develop and test AI applications across seven interconnected areas, including production planning, supply chain management, safety and environment, and product design. A survey of corporate needs indicated that AI should be applied to tasks where actual decision-making occurs, such as production planning, management planning, marketing, and delivery management.
Over 90 companies submitted requests for this initiative, with ten firms, including Seongwoo Hightech and Daeduck Electronics, being selected for participation. The budget for this year's project is 6 billion won.
For AI agents to be effectively implemented in manufacturing companies, the joint use of process data and management data is essential. This means that quality, equipment, and inventory data from production sites need to be linked to decision-making in delivery, purchasing, sales, and safety management. AI must evolve from a simple analytical tool to a "business operations partner" that assists in actual work.
To facilitate data integration, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the promotion of manufacturing data linkage and utilization has been signed. The goal is to leverage manufacturing process data accumulated from last year's Industrial AI Solutions project in this year's follow-up projects and AI Agents initiative.
Manufacturing data is crucial in the AI era, often referred to as the raw material for the manufacturing industry. However, companies face challenges due to varying data formats and significant security concerns regarding external sharing. The government's efforts to establish a data linkage system through specialized and research institutions aim to create a standardized, secure, and usable foundation at the public level that individual manufacturing companies may find difficult to manage alone.
Kim Sung-yeol, head of the Ministry's Industrial Growth Office, stated, "The outcome of the AI race will ultimately be determined in the industrial field that generates added value. We will actively support the expansion of M.AX beyond manufacturing sites to areas such as management planning and production management, enabling comprehensive innovation in corporate activities."
