The Food and Drug Safety Agency (FDSA) is launching hygiene inspections of delivery restaurants specializing in samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), naengmyeon (cold noodles), and chicken, as summer consumption of these foods increases. The inspections will target over 3,700 establishments nationwide to assess hygiene management and food poisoning prevention measures.
Starting from July 13 to July 20, the FDAS will conduct focused inspections in collaboration with local governments at restaurants that deliver and sell samgyetang, naengmyeon, and chicken, as well as those that use eggs as a primary ingredient, such as kimbap and toast.
This initiative aims to strengthen hygiene management at restaurants serving popular summer foods and those using eggs, which pose a higher risk of salmonella food poisoning. It is known that bacteria that cause food poisoning proliferate most rapidly at temperatures around 35 to 36 degrees Celsius.
The inspection will focus on delivery restaurants that have not been inspected recently or have a history of violating food hygiene laws, including those specializing in samgyetang, naengmyeon, and chicken, as well as egg-based dishes like kimbap and toast.
Inspectors will check whether health examinations have been conducted, the hygienic handling of food and cooking areas, the storage and use of expired products, and compliance with facility standards such as the installation of insect screens and waste covers. They will also verify adherence to the chicken weight labeling system, which has been fully implemented since July 1.
For restaurants using eggs, inspectors will focus on whether they are using eggs with cracked shells or those potentially contaminated with food poisoning bacteria, as well as whether they are using separate knives and cutting boards.
In addition to inspections, the FDAS plans to randomly collect over 160 samples of prepared foods, including samgyetang, naengmyeon, kimbap, and toast, for food poisoning bacteria testing.
The FDAS stated, "We will take administrative actions against violators and continue to strengthen hygiene and safety management for delivery foods."
