SEOUL, July 23 (AJP) - Samsung Electronics' largest labor union is considering a voluntary program allowing employees to donate a portion of their special performance bonuses to social causes, according to an internal union notice.
The Samsung Group Super Enterprise Labor Union said the proposal, which was recently shared with its policy committee, is expected to be announced alongside guidance on special bonuses in the third or fourth quarter.
Under the proposal, employees in the Device Solutions (DS) semiconductor division could choose to contribute between 0 percent and 1 percent of their special performance bonus. Participation would be entirely voluntary, with no upper limit on donations, the union said.
The notice said the initiative is intended to address public criticism over large bonus payouts while supporting shareholder-friendly policies. Union executives and policy committee representatives also plan to participate in the program.
The proposal follows discussions that began in June on encouraging employees to voluntarily donate part of their bonuses after Samsung agreed to a special performance bonus package with labor unions.
The union said the timing and details of the program have yet to be finalized and would be announced once discussions are completed.
