The National Oceanographic Institute under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on October 7 that it has developed programs utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline the processing of temperature and salinity data and manage marine scientific survey data.

The new marine data processing program automates the previously manual nine-step process for handling marine observation data with the push of a button, significantly improving processing speed. Additionally, the marine data management program automatically compares and checks the marine scientific survey data lists provided by 25 institutions from academia and industry, enhancing data management efficiency by identifying errors.

These improvements have reduced the processing time for marine observation data, such as temperature and salinity, allowing for quicker dissemination of the latest data to the public. The rapidly processed temperature and salinity data will be made easily accessible to everyone through the 'Bada Nuri Marine Information' platform.

Furthermore, the 'Open Sea' initiative will provide accurate marine scientific survey data lists, enabling researchers and the general public to utilize marine information within their jurisdiction more effectively.

Notably, two youth interns, Kim Nam-hee and Choi Min-seo, working in the Marine Scientific Research Division of the National Oceanographic Institute, contributed to the program's development using generative AI in a 'conversational coding' approach, adding significance to the project.

Jang Myo-in, the head of the National Oceanographic Institute, stated, "We will continue to enhance the efficiency of marine survey operations and provide better marine information services to the public. I am particularly pleased that the youth intern program has evolved beyond simple administrative experience, allowing young people’s fresh perspectives and AI capabilities to intersect with national marine survey efforts for mutual growth."
