Kumho Construction is expanding its smart safety monitoring system, which allows real-time tracking of worker locations and alerts for entering hazardous areas, to 64 construction and civil engineering sites. The system has been pre-registered for use at 35 building sites and 29 civil engineering and plant sites.

According to Kumho Construction, the system utilizes workers' smartphones without the need for additional tracking devices or smart bands. Managers can monitor the locations and number of workers on-site, and the system automatically issues warnings if workers enter pre-defined hazardous areas, such as large excavation sites, confined spaces, or heavy machinery operation zones.

The system also includes a feature that allows workers to report dangerous situations. If a worker perceives a risk or needs assistance, they can press the 'SOS' button in the app, which will display their location on the manager's screen and send an alert.

This system was first developed at the National Yeoncheon Memorial Park construction site, where the extensive area of approximately 959,000 square meters made it challenging to manage worker locations and access to hazardous areas using only visual inspections or CCTV.

While construction site accidents have been declining, they still account for a significant portion of overall industrial accidents. According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor, there were 253 fatalities from accidents under investigation in the first half of this year, with 105 of those deaths, or 41.5%, occurring in the construction industry.

Kumho Construction applied for a patent on September 22 for a 'smartphone sensor-based safety monitoring method and device for work sites.' On September 29, the company completed copyright registration for the related program. Future plans include adding features such as automatic check-in and check-out using geofencing technology to establish virtual boundaries.

A Kumho Construction official stated, “We will strengthen our on-site safety management system through real-time location monitoring, hazard area alerts, and SOS calls.”
