Daewoo Engineering has become the first construction company in South Korea to pass the second stage of carbon reduction certification for on-site concrete using its self-developed carbon-reducing concrete. The company plans to secure carbon credits through final review and utilize them for achieving carbon neutrality.

On October 15, Daewoo Engineering announced that its 'carbon-reducing high-strength concrete,' developed on September 30, has passed the methodology certification and business plan certification review by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The carbon reduction certification is a system operated by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which verifies greenhouse gas reduction effects and issues carbon credits through a three-stage review process, including methodology certification, business plan certification, and monitoring report certification.

Daewoo Engineering has been pursuing certification for its carbon-reducing high-strength concrete 'DECOCON,' developed in collaboration with Halla Cement. With this review approval, the company has completed a key procedure for issuing carbon credits and will proceed to obtain them through monitoring report certification.

The certification process utilized consulting from Hanyang University's Carbon Neutral Smart Building Center and construction and quality data accumulated by Daewoo Engineering at actual construction sites. The carbon reduction effects were quantitatively assessed and verified based on on-site demonstration data.

Daewoo Engineering estimates that the application of 300,000 cubic meters of carbon-reducing high-strength concrete will result in a reduction of approximately 32,000 tons of carbon emissions. Once carbon credits are issued, the company is considering trading them in the voluntary carbon market or using them to offset greenhouse gas emissions generated at overseas projects.

Previously, Daewoo Engineering obtained environmental product declaration (EPD) certification and low-carbon product certification from the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment for this concrete. Through the carbon reduction certification process, the company is moving beyond existing environmental assessments to convert carbon reduction achievements into credits.

The government announced in April the direction for establishing a 'Korean-style voluntary carbon market' and is working on related legislation and market establishment within the Korea Exchange, aiming for market opening by the end of this year. Daewoo Engineering plans to enhance its carbon neutrality response capabilities by applying domestically developed carbon reduction technologies to overseas projects.

A Daewoo Engineering official stated, "Passing the methodology certification and business plan certification, which are key procedures for carbon reduction certification, is an important step in objectively verifying the greenhouse gas reduction effects of carbon reduction technologies. Based on the data accumulated from actual sites, we will promptly complete the remaining monitoring report review to secure carbon credits for on-site concrete and actively utilize them for achieving carbon neutrality."
