AI data center thermal management company MHS has developed an ultra-light cold plate that cools high-heat graphics processing units (GPUs) while reducing cooling water usage. As the heat output of AI GPUs exceeds 1 kW, the focus is on increasing efficiency to operate more GPUs with the same cooling equipment.

On October 20, MHS announced that it recorded a thermal resistance of 0.0094℃/W while simulating the heat conditions of NVIDIA's Blackwell B300 GPU at 1180W with a cooling water flow rate of 2.5 liters per minute. The company noted that this level is lower than the approximately 0.01℃/W of leading global products.

Even with a 60% reduction in cooling water to 1.0 liter per minute, the thermal resistance was recorded at 0.0124℃/W. MHS explained that it handled a higher thermal load with less cooling water compared to published test cases of GB300 products.

The cold plate weighs about 110 grams, with the core heat exchange section designed to be around 1 mm thick, reducing the load on the GPU and motherboard while maximizing space utilization within high-density AI servers.

Market research firm TrendForce predicts that the application rate of liquid cooling for AI chips will rise from approximately 33% last year to 53% this year. The adoption of liquid cooling for high-performance AI chips from NVIDIA, AMD, and Google is driving rapid growth in demand for related components such as cold plates and CDU.

MHS plans to conduct external performance verification through specialized data center cooling equipment companies. The company also intends to enhance cooling performance by applying 'multi-layer microchannel' technology, which increases the number of microchannels.

Im Jong-soo, CEO of MHS, stated, "The competition for cooling in AI data centers is now a battle of how little cooling water and pumping power can be used rather than how cold it can be cooled. We will prove our technology through comparative tests under the same conditions as global top products and aggressively target the overseas AI server and data center market."
