According to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), as of the end of the second quarter of this year, the total amount in pension savings reached 224.8 trillion won, a 13.4% increase from the end of last year’s 198.2 trillion won. As the pension savings market expands, disputes regarding pension amounts and early withdrawals continue to arise.

A common issue is the discrepancy between expected and actual pension amounts. One participant noted that when they enrolled in a pension savings insurance plan in the late 1990s, the applied interest rate was 11.25%. However, by the time they began receiving their pension, the rate had dropped to 4.0%, resulting in a lower payout than anticipated.

For interest-linked pension savings insurance, the actual payout may vary based on changes in the applied interest rate after enrollment, so consumers should be cautious.

It is also important to understand the tax implications of early withdrawals. If a pension savings account is withdrawn from or terminated early, a 16.5% tax on the contributions that received tax deductions and investment income will be imposed. However, in cases of unavoidable circumstances such as the death of the account holder, moving abroad, or long-term care, a lower pension income tax rate of 3.3% to 5.5% may apply. Documentation must be submitted within six months of the occurrence of such circumstances.

Even after beginning to receive pension payments, the actual amount received may vary due to changes in the applied interest rate, fund performance, and tax criteria. If there is an existing loan against the policy, transfers to other pension savings accounts may be restricted, so prior verification is necessary.
