Starting in November, taxi fares in Daejeon will increase.

According to the city of Daejeon, the base fare for medium-sized taxis will rise by 500 won, from the current 4,300 won to 4,800 won, effective November 1. The distance covered by the base fare will decrease from 1.8 kilometers to 1.65 kilometers, a reduction of 150 meters.

The distance fare will change from 132 meters per 100 won to 125 meters, while the time fare, applicable when traveling at speeds below 15 kilometers per hour, will adjust from 33 seconds per 100 won to 29 seconds. This means not only will the base fare increase, but the intervals for additional charges will also shorten.

The base fare for deluxe and large taxis will also rise from 5,500 won to 6,000 won, although the base distance of 3 kilometers and the distance and time fare standards will remain unchanged.

The increase in the medium taxi base fare is the first adjustment in 3 years and 4 months, following a previous adjustment in March that maintained the base, distance, and time fares while modifying late-night and complex surcharge rates.

The city explained that the fare increase is due to rising transportation costs and the challenging business conditions faced by the taxi industry.

A study on transportation cost calculations indicated a need for a 13.5% fare increase compared to current rates. The taxi industry proposed an average increase of 12.1%, but the city decided on an average increase of 11.4% for medium taxis, considering the burden on citizens and inflation.

The fare adjustment plan was finalized after reviews by the Transportation Committee on September 22 and the Consumer Policy Committee on October 15.

Park Seung-won, head of the Daejeon Transportation Bureau, stated, "As the taxi fare increase will add to the burden on citizens, there must be corresponding improvements in service. We will work with the taxi industry to create a friendly and safe operating environment to enhance taxi service quality."

The labor and management of general taxis have agreed to maintain the current standards related to transportation income for six months to stabilize the income and working conditions of drivers.
