“Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) has been given birth for the purpose of creating a new growth engine of the Korean economy and to be a long-standing hub of Northeast Asia five years ago with high hope and warm attention of Korean people.”

“All employees of IFEZ have put their best efforts to create a successful IFEZ for the last five years in spite of poor conditions. At the fifth anniversary of the opening, our global-scale projects and investment promotion have been vigorously undertaken in a way to realize a ‘dream city’ for opening the global era,” IFEZ Commissioner Lee Heon-seok said to the Aju News.

Commissioner Lee explained a motive for IFEZ construction with saying, “Incheon City, which has played a role as an advance base of modern industry, recently focused on IFEZ and is putting spurs to create a new growth power in Korea based on distribution.”

“Especially, IFEZ is appearing as the only representative free economic zone in five years since its inauguration, and dreaming to take a leap toward the representative free economic zone in Asia beyond Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, and Dubai until 2020,” he added.

IFEZ aims to be the best business city in Northeast Asia. The economy of Incheon based on manufacturing industry will be transformed into a higher value-added high-tech industry including IT, BT, distribution, tourism, and knowledge industry.

“Today, the name of ‘Incheon’ reminds many people of Free Economic Zone,” Commissioner Lee said. “It shows the efforts that many people have made in order to materialize our dream into the reality for the past five years.”

IFEZ consists of three large parts with Songdo centered on international business, Yongjong as an air distribution city, and Choengna for a financial hub. With completing their development for each district, IFEZ will be reborn as a high-tech business city, the most competitive one in Northeast Area.

However, in relation to a number of challenges that we need to overcome are ahead of Korean economy, “We will put all our efforts and strengths to bring about the support from the central government and to form a national consensus through promoting that the success of IFEZ would be a precious opportunity to advance the country and it would be a blue ocean for co-existence and win-win situation,” Commissioner Lee said.

Finally, he added, “I hope that this newly issued result would give people a clear picture of changes and improvement that IFEZ has made, and thus they can have pride and close attention on the future of Incheon.”
