ADB Names S. Korea Financial Regulator As Chief Economist

The Asia Development Bank appointed Rhee Chang-yong, secretary general and Sherpa of the Presidential Committee for the G-20 summit of South Korea, as new chief economist of the Bank.

Rhee was the vice-chairman of the Financial Services Commission, a watchdog of South Korea, as well as Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission. With over 20 years experiences as an economist, he has been a financial advisor and an academic, the ADB said Thursday.

According to the announcement from the ADB, Rhee has provided extensive policy support the Korean government, including serving as a member of the National Economic Advisory Council in the Office of the President, and advisor to the Bank of Korea.

In the private sector, he has advised Shinhan Bank and Woori Investment and Securities Co., among others. He has also been the director of financial market thing tank, the Korea Fixed Income Research Institute, Automatedtrader.net reported.

The news agency said that as ADB’s chief economist, Rhee will act as the regional bank’s spokesman on economic issues and head its Economics and Research Department which carries out policy research on development challenges facing Asia and the Pacific.

Rhee has served as a professor of economic at Seoul National University, and has had numerous research papers published in leading economic journals. He received a PhD in economics at Harvard University in 1989.
