The Army is investigating allegations that a male cadet sexually assaulted a female cadet, both under the influence of alcohol, in his room on campus during daytime last week, Army officers said Wednesday.

The military police arrested the male cadet, they said.

A sexual abuse case involving male and female cadets took place at the Korea Military Academy (KMA) on May 22 during a cadets' festival, an officer said.

They were among about 20 students and professors who drank "poktanju," a mixture of soju (Korean spirits) and beer, during lunchtime under the guidance of a professor, he said.

After taking care of the female sophomore who kept vomiting, the senior cadet took her to his room and reportedly assaulted her, the officer said.

It is the first time that a sexual assault case has occurred at the KMA since women were admitted to the military academy in 1998.

Drinking is prohibited at the KMA, but students can drink if they get approval from general-level officers or professors in advance, KMA officials said.

Women account for about 10 percent of 250 cadets enrolled at the KMA a year, according to the officials.
