Consumers will soon be able to purchase food nearing its expiration date or unsold items at discounted prices through delivery apps.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment announced on June 14 that it will launch a smartphone app and web-based service for unsold food discounts starting June 15, in collaboration with platform operators and food retailers.

This service aims to provide consumers with information about unsold food items from restaurants, bakeries, and convenience stores, thereby reducing waste and minimizing food waste generation.

Consumers can check discounted product information from nearby stores via delivery apps or dedicated discount apps and websites, allowing them to purchase items at lower prices. Participating stores are expected to reduce disposal costs and secure additional revenue by selling remaining stock.

Major delivery platforms such as Baedal Minjok, Yogiyo, and Coupang Eats, along with dedicated discount platforms like Lucky Meal and Magu Market, will participate in the service. Bakery franchises and the restaurant and convenience store sectors are also expected to expand participation among their affiliated stores.

As interest in reducing food waste and promoting resource recycling grows, the trend of discounting food nearing its expiration date, known as 'Food Recovery,' is also gaining traction. This service is attracting attention for its potential to lessen the burden on consumers while simultaneously reducing food waste.

The Ministry of Climate expects this service to contribute to reducing food waste and greenhouse gas emissions. According to the ministry, approximately 5 million tons of food waste are generated annually in South Korea.

Kim Go-eung, Director of Resource Circulation at the ministry, stated, "The operation of this service will be a significant turning point in spreading the culture of food discounts. We will continue to support the public in recognizing and utilizing discount sales as an eco-friendly consumption culture in their daily lives."
